Hot Stone massage basics

When most people think about a massage, the first thing that comes to mind is the sensation of warm hands soothing aching muscles. Most people don’t associate stones with relaxation. But hot stone massage is actually a very soothing technique I use for relaxation and healing and once my clients try it, they ask for it again.

Curious if hot stone massage is for you? This blog will explain the basics of a hot stone massage.

What is a hot stone massage?

It is known as thermotherapy and combines the use of natural stones along with different massage techniques. By warming the stones in a crock pot or heating dish, they retain heat as well as geomagnetism from the Earth, which balances and heals.

I place stones of different sizes on different areas of the body as well as hold them and use them for gentle massage strokes along the skin. When the stones lie on the skin, they help to remove energy blockages that can lead to illnesses.

What kind of stones are used?

Typically I use basalt stones, which have a rich ebony colour. These are also known as river rocks and are known for their flat, smooth texture.

Are the stones very hot?

The stones are warm and sometimes I use cold ones as well. Because the stones provide a source of heat they actually increase the circulation of fluids in the body and even reduce swelling or pain. By using hot and cold stones, the muscles contract with the different temperature and this can be a very effective detoxifying treatment.

Everyone handles heat differently so it is important during a session to let me know if you can handle more heat or prefer a cooler temperature. Sometimes people with lighter skin can be more sensitive to the heat than those with darker skin.

Is it a new technique?

It has actually been around for a very long time, since ancient times. But it is becoming more common today as people realise the health and relaxation benefits of the technique.
